Main facts

Ukraine is a country in Central-Eastern Europe. According to area, Ukraine is the biggest solely European country in Europe (Russia is much larger, yet has also Asian territories). Its territory is 603,700 km?.
Ukraine has borders with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Belarus as well as Russia, and access to the Black and Azov Seas. Due to its advantageous geographical location and network aircraft, railway, marine and motor transport connections Ukraine is a transit corridor for passengers and goods from different states.
Most of the territory of the country is a plain. Only in the West and South of Ukraine, on Crimea, there are mountain chains, the Carpathians and Crimean mountains. The highest point of Ukraine is the mountain Hoverla (2061 m) in the Carpathians.

The climate and nature

The climate in most of Ukraine is moderately continental. But its nature is of a great variety, and strikes even experienced travelers. There are thick forests, boundless fields and flat rivers. Their beauty is quiet, but charming. In spring and summer, the green cheers up, in autumn, there is mixture of yellow, red and orange, and, in winter, everything is covered with a white snow sheet. The winters in Ukraine are snowy, however, not severe. The snowing begins at the end of November or in December.

On Crimea or in the Carpathians, this is where Ukrainians like to spend their holidays and vacations. Here one can also meet tourists from other countries. The Crimea is a peninsula in the South of Ukraine. The sea meets the mountains here. On the South coast of the peninsula, there is a subtropics oasis. Throughout the year something blossoms here.

The Carpathians are located in the Western part of the country. People call them the “blue mountains”. Perhaps, it is the color of thick forests, rivers and lakes, or the morning fog on the alpine meadows which give the impression of a bluish fairy-tale world. In winter, lovers of mountain-skiing go to the Carpathians.

The unique is also an, in Europe, unique preserve of a largely untouched steppe. This is the Askaniia Nova in the South of country. In the silvery waves of the feather-grass, herds of bisons and Przheval'sky horses are pasturing. Here, it is possible to arrange a safari – a photo-safari of course, as this is a preserve.
